Volunteer Project:
Mulching Citrus Trees in the Orchard
9 AM - 10 AM
Volunteers will care for citrus trees in the orchard at Baton Roots Community Farm. Mulching helps trees retain moisture and suppresses weeds around their base, and it is essential to support the long term health of our food-producing trees! Participants are able to take home any produce harvested at the farm as well as a small fruit tree to plant at home. This activity requires a fair amount of walking, bending, lifting, shoveling, and pushing wheelbarrows. Reach out to batonroots@thewallsproject.org for additional accommodations as needed. This program is supported by a grant through the USDA Forest Service.
Workshop and Volunteer Activity:
Fruit Tree Guilds
10 AM - 11 AM
Learn about Fruit Tree Guilds- What are they? How do they support a thriving, food-producing ecosystem? How can you plant them in your yard or neighborhood? Learn about beneficial companion plants for common Louisiana fruit trees with Baton Roots and Baton Rouge Green staff. Afterwards, join us in planting the first demonstration guilds in the orchard at Baton Roots Community Farm! Participants are able to take home any produce harvested at the farm as well as a small fruit tree to plant at home. This activity requires a fair amount of walking, some bending, lifting, and shoveling. Reach out to batonroots@thewallsproject.org for additional accommodations as needed. This program is supported by a grant through the USDA Forest Service.

This event is scheduled from 10:30-11:30 to allow participants to attend other sessions. Registering for this event does not require you to stay for the entire hour, but provides a more accurate headcount for food preparation. Limited bench seating is provided. This program is supported by Geaux Get Healthy, a project of HealthyBR.
